Between countryside and nature reserve

Between countryside and nature reserve

The plot is located in the south-eastern coast of Sicily, not far from the nature reserve of Vendicari, and it is surrounded by the oliveyards and vineyards landscape.

The main concept for the design for this garden finds its inspiration in the mediterranean maquis that grows spountaneously along the coast line, closeby the project area.
An oasis of evergreen plants grows in contrast with the bare brown soil of the plot.

The selection of native species includes:
Chamaerops humilis, Juniperus macrocarpa, Pistacia lentiscus, Myrtus communis, Thymus capitatus and Teucrium fruticans.
In september, with the first rains, the flowers of the Urginea maritima bulbs elegantly come out among the other plants. Close to the native species, ornamental blue agaves (Agave weberi) thrive in the mediterranean conditions. The selected species attract bees and other pollinators, making this garden a real contribution to biodiversity.

Ornamental stones (sourced in place) give rhythm to the composition and remind of a walk through nature.
The path to the pool is made of natural rough stones and recalls the squared shape of the pool.

The surrounding agricultural land is visible, there are no hard fences or barriers.
